What Are Jandals?

Jandals, also known as flip-flops or thongs, are open-toed sandals with a Y-shaped strap that sits between the toes. Lightweight and easy to wear, they're a staple of casual attire, especially in warm climates like New Zealand.

While jandals are now a global footwear favourite, their origins go back over a century. Early versions made from materials like papyrus were worn in ancient Egypt, providing protection from hot sand and rugged terrain.

Over time, jandals evolved with influences from different cultures. Japan's zori, for example, is similar to flip-flops but made with thicker soles and materials like rice straw and tatami. In the 1960s, Brazil introduced Havaianas, which became famous for their rubber soles and recycled materials. It went on to become a global brand.

Today, jandals come in many styles and materials, from basic rubber to luxurious leather, and remain a go-to choice for beachgoers and travellers alike. Whether relaxing by the pool, running errands, or soaking up the sunshine, jandals are the perfect casual companion.
